Among the early settlers on Staten Island was a Walloon or Huguenot, Pieere Billiou (or Bilyeu) whose daughter Martha married Captain Thomas Stilwell (ca. 1651-1704). The Billiou family and the Stilwell family possessed several tracts of land together in the late 17th century. Their house is still known as the Billiou-Stillwell-Perine House. Its oldest section may well date from 1662, making it the only building erected under Dutch rule on the island.
