The Spence School, an 8 story independent college-preparatory day school for girls kindergarten through 12th, located on East 91st street, was designed by John Russell Pope in 1929. It was founded by Clara B. Spence in 1892 to “educate girls and young women to the highest academic and personal standards necessary for responsible, effective citizenship and for the successful pursuit of higher education. " More like a club than a house or apartment block, Pope’s elegant but restrained Georgian design took advantage of the adjacent gardens of the Andrew Carnegie mansion to permit windows on the inventively composed west façade of his mid-block building.
