Zito's Bakery, 259 Bleecker Street. Taken February 3, 1937.

The day after photographing Mandaro’s Cheese Store, Abbott returned to Bleecker Street to make its counterpart, Bread Store, owned by Anthony Zito. Zito’s was the older and larger of the two family businesses: Mandaro had been in the neighborhood for 15 years and Zito for more than 30; Mandaro’s business was primarily retail, while Zito supplied restaurants and groceries throughout the City; Mandaro’s business was valued at $5,000, and Zito’s at $12,000.

The narrow, crowded Bleecker Street sidewalk afforded Abbott little flexibility in composing these storefront photographs. The intricate geometry of Bread Store — the fancifully shaped breads, the “five-cent” signs, the basement entryway, the large wicker baskets, the white brickwork, and the complicated reflections from across the street — make this one of Abbott’s most memorable photographs. In a variant, a young man’s head and shoulders rising from the basement lends the work a surrealist touch. Abbott preferred the version which, like many of Atget’s Parisian storefronts, shows a shopkeeper looking out at the photographer. Zito’s still operates at 259 Bleecker Street, run by Anthony’s son Charles and grandson Charles, Jr.
