16-18 Charles Street ca. 1938
This house belonged to a row of 11 houses built in 1845-46 by carpenter Patrick Cogan. Abbott was attracted to the doorway, the result of an eccentric renovation of unknown date. Nos. 16 and 18 were combined and an original door frame and oval window were installed at the basement-level entry. The fanciful ironwork canopy and the flagstone sidewalk converted Abbott’s straightforward document into a maze of graphic patterns.
