The William Tecumseh Sherman monument is one of the masterpieces of the famed New York sculptor Augustus St. Gaudens. In 1892, St. Gaudens had created a bust of General Sherman, who had moved to New York after the Civil war, and it was this bust that inspired St.Gaudens to sculpt the larger equestrian statue to commemorate Sherman's wartime contributions. Completed in 1903, the William Tecumseh Sherman Monument was placed at the main entrance of Central Park. However, when the Pulitzer Fountain was created, the Monument was moved in order for Grand Army Plaza to be symmetrical.
