W.C. Whitney ca. 1901-1902

William Collins Whitney and his second wife were the third owners of this mansard-roofed brownstone mansion. Mrs. Whitney died just prior to the 1899 completion of its three-year interior renovation, and her husband died in 1904 of appendicitis. Built by architect William Schickel in the early 1880s, the house passed through several hands over the years, until its 1942, just nine months after the death of its final occupant, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney.
