Outdoor Services in the City

Does anybody need a haircut? A few months ago, going to a barbershop, shopping, or dining outdoors wouldn't have seemed extraordinary. As New York carefully reopens after closures due to the Covid-19 pandemic, these photos offer a glimpse of "Phase 2"-friendly scenes from the city's history.

Paul McGregor Haircutters was a beloved barbershop on St. Marks Place. McGregor opened it in 1965, and quickly rose to fame as the inventor of the shag haircut, as well as Jane Fonda's barber. During the COVID-19 pandemic, barbershops and salons were closed. It was not uncommon to see people getting outdoor haircuts like the one you see above.

The Siegel-Cooper Department Store opened in 1896, and was the largest retail establishment in the city. In this 1900 photo, New Yorkers enjoy some window-shopping. In "Phase 2" of re-opening the city, retail stores are permitted to re-open to shoppers. After months of quiet storefronts, window-shopping may return again, as well.

"Phase 2" will see the re-opening of the city's several-hundred public playgrounds. Until now, swing sets like this one at Tompkins Square Park have been roped off.

In "Phase 2," outdoor seating at restaurants is prime real estate. Not all establishments have rooftop gardens like Cedar Street Tavern does here.
