The Bronx Food Walk

Just north of Manhattan is one of New York City’s most diverse and culturally enriching boroughs: the Bronx. The Bronx is home to Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, the New York Botanical Garden, and so many other wonderful sites to visit. The popularity and spread of hip-hop music in the 1970 and 80s can be traced back to the Bronx. Besides the historical sites you can visit, you will surely be hungry after a long day of exploring the Bronx and its expansive history. The Bronx’s iconic Arthur Avenue has a plethora of Italian cuisine and dishes you can choose from, while you can find an abundance of gourmet Latin restaurants in other neighborhoods. While you might not be able to hit all these locations in one day on foot, be sure to check out these food establishments after a fun outing to a landmark in the Bronx.

The Bronx itself isn’t usually known as a seaside community in the midst of the concrete jungle, but City Island is more like a quaint fishing village compared to the usual hustle and bustle of midtown Manhattan. At the very tip of City Island in the Bronx is Tony’s Pier, a seafood restaurant with views of the Long Island Sound, located next to the Morris Yacht Beach Club. Around the 1870s, Stephen D. Horton’s, one of City Island’s first settlers, built the Chateau Laurier, a grand mansion that was used as the Monte Carlo Hotel and was later sold to the Morris Yacht Club. Today, visitors can dine at Tony’s Pier for any seafood meal they’d like.

In 1931, the Rex Cole Showroom was one of many successful art deco stores, under the leadership of architect Raymond Hood. The Rex Cole company itself was a number of successful appliance stores located in the tri-state area during the early 20th century. Unfortunately, in 1935, Hood was forced to declare bankruptcy and close a majority of Rex Cole stores, which was the last store remaining until the 1950s. A short distance from the Rex Cole Showroom on the Grand Concourse is Papaye, a Ghanian restaurant. Papaye might appear like a small storefront, but it has a large menu of Ghanian food. Amongst those in the Bronx’s Ghanian community, Papaye is a popular place to grab aromatic and delicious West African dishes like jollof rice and chicken, tilapia fish, and agushi soup.
