Astoria Walking Tour

Queens has been developed to be one of New York City’s most diverse borough. Astoria is no different and it is located on the Northwest corner of Queens, New York. Astoria has now become a popular residential area for young professionals due to its fast commute to Manhattan, inexpensive housing and rich nightlife it offers.

Hallett's Cove

Hallet's Cove expands over 161 acres of land. This land was granted by the Dutch where he then used this land for a school and other family-operated businesses such as a Funeral Home. Astoria was first named Hallets Cove by Stephen Hasley but then it renamed to Astoria (because of John Jacob Astor).

Astoria Ferry Landing

The first passage boat operated in the 1700s from Hallets Cove to present-day Manhattan. Benjamin Waldron and his son Adolf operated on irregular ferry service. In 1782, the regular ferry service began using horse boats. But by 1840, the demand for the ferry was so high that the horse boats were replaced with steamboats.

Hell Gate Bridge

In order to construct the Hell Gate Bridge, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began to clear obstacles from the strait with explosives. On October 10, 1885, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers detonated 9 acres of river surface which became one of the largest controlled detonations. This detonation blasted up to 150 feet in the air.

Steinway & Sons Piano Factory icon

Steinway & Sons Piano Factory

William Steinway bought 400 acres of land in Astoria where he built spacious factory, public trolley line, church and among other things. Steinway & Sons Piano Factory is a piano maker factory that was formed in 1830s in Germany. In 1853, Henry Steinweg then expanded the factory into New York City.

Steinway Mansion

The Steinway's family was centered around a 27 room mansion. As what the United States of Interior would describe it as "on a prominent wooded hilltop overlooking the East River."

William Cullen Bryant High School icon

William Cullen Bryant High School

William Cullen Bryant High School was its first public high school in Queens (1889) that trained young women in stenography and typewriting. It was imperative for young women to learn if they wanted to be employed as a secretary. Reading complicated codes was essential to becoming an expert in this odd machine.
