CBGB opened in 1973 and became a big part of the downtown music scene. Artists, musicians, and music lovers alike flocked to the space including actress, writer, and singer Lydia Lunch, shown here with Adele Bertei and Anya Phillips. A famed venue for new wave and punk music, some of the major bands from this era, like Blondie, Patti Smith, The Ramones, the Talking Heads, and Television, performed here, among others.

As former Talking Heads band member Tina Weymouth recalled "We became part of that [scene at CBGB]...we could congregate there. Anybody who worked there, played there, or had come to write about the bands had free entry."
